Toshiba HD XA1 HD DVD Player Announced

Toshiba HD XA1 HD DVD player prototype will be introduced at the Ceatec trade show in Japan.

The prototype is almost identical, according to the company, to the final model, to be released before the end of 2005.

What's notable with the prototype is that it's design seems quite bulky, which would hint that the design process is still undergoing before the final product is shipped.

Toshiba is going all out on being at the forefront at the high definition DVD race.

They are also unveiling the prototype on another HD DVD product, a HD-DVD drive suitable for notebook computers.

All these moves are in preparation for the upcoming launch of next-generation of DVD products, based on two competing standards, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

HD-DVD will be available in the US in early 2006, about the same time as Blu-Ray camp is promising products for that standard.

Toshiba is in the group that develops and markets products based on the HD-DVD format.
