Toshiba D VR3

Here's a review of the Toshiba D VR3, it's best features and value for money, as well as comparisons to other DVD recorders.

The D VR3 has been designed to be an easy transition from VCRs, as the machine has both a DVD and a HiFi VCR recorder unit.

There is no easier method to transfer your old VHS tapes to DVD than using a recorder that has both a VCR and a DVD recorder.

That transfer process is as easy as it gets: record from tape to disc or disc to tape, at the touch of a button.

These combos (DVD recorder/VCR) have not been in the market for very long time, so the price is still quite high, but you'll find the combination to be good value for money if you have existing VHS tapes to transfer.

Toshiba D VR3 - Features

As you'll probably be using more of the DVD recorder features than the ones for VCR, you should pay more attention to them.

Features in the DVD recorder unit of the D VR3 include:

* records to DVD-RAM, and DVD-R & DVD-RW* plays DVD-Video, DVD-R & DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM* plays CD, CD-R & CD-RW, and MP3-encoded CD-R & CD-RW* plays digital photo CDs (JPEG) » 54MHz/10-bit video D/A converter* progressive-scan mode playback for smoother video with HD-compatible TVs* five DVD recording quality/time settings* record to DVD while watching VHS, or vice versa

In addition to the easy dubbing between VCR and DVD, there are other easy-to-use features in this device.

For example, the built-in TV tuner and VCR Plus+ let you program your DVD or VHS recorder to catch your favorite TV shows.

If you have a camcorder, the unit also has a front panel DV input (also known as iLINK or IEEE 1394) jack for dubbing from DV-compatible digital camcorders.

Toshiba D VR3 - Competition

Competition with both a DVD recorder and VCR unit in one machine include:

* Sony RDR-VX500* Panasonic DMR E75VS

Of these, the Sony DVD/VCR player has DVD+RW/+R and DVD-RW/-R, multi-format recording compatibility.

The Panasonic combines recording onto DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs with a VHS recorder unit. It is also compatible with CD-R/RW for MP3 audio.
