Toshiba D KR2

Here's a review of Toshiba D KR2, the value for money it offers, main features, and how it compares to other DVD recorders.

You are probably familiar with the DVD recorder formats war between DVD-RAM, DVD-R/-RW, and DVD+R/+RW.

As a solution to all the different formats and to the difficulty of choosing one, there are now DVD recorders with multi-format support available, and the D-KR2 is one of those recorders.

The D-KR2 can record and play back video using DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW recordable discs formats.

The DVD-RAM format has many great features, such as time shifting (watch the beginning of a program while the recorder records the rest) and the DVD-R format is the most backwards compatible format to be used with existing DVD players of the available standards.

Therefore, even though the DKR2 is not the cheapest Toshiba DVD recorder around, you'll find it good value for money if you're not sure about which DVD format you'll need.

Toshiba D KR2 - Features

In addition to the multi-format support, the D KR2 is easy to use in many other ways.

For example, the recorder supports Auto Title/Chapter/Thumbnail creation. When recording, the D-KR2 will automatically capture the first video frame and displays it as the chapter mark.

Later, you can choose chapter marks with your own custom screen captures, or Thumbnails, for future reference.

There's also support for multiple audio format playback, including Recordable Compact Discs (CD-R & CD-RW) with music stored in either the Windows Media Audio (WMA) or MP3 file formats.

The easiness of using this DVD recorder is also evident in the timer recording feature, with VCR Plus+ C3.

The D-KR2 has a 181-channel cable compatible tuner and a 2-month, 32-event timer programming functionality.

You can input your own program data, or take advantage of the built-in Gemstar VCR+ technology for simple timer event programming.

Toshiba D KR2 - Competition

For similar price range, you can consider such DVD recorders as:

* Samsung DVD-R4000* Panasonic DMR-E55* Sylvania DVR-90DE

and many other models. Of the featured competitors, the Samsung DVD-R4000 has support for DVD-RAM and DVD-R formats, and can capture up to one hour of recording in a single disc in XP mode, two hours in SP mode, four hours in LP mode, or six hours in EP mode.

The Panasonic DMR-E55, meanwhile, is very similar to the Samsung DVD-R4000, with DVD-R and DVD-RAM recording support, plus progressive scan playback, great for HD television sets.

The Sylvania DVR-90DE does not support DVD-RAM. Rather, it has recording format support for the DVD-R/-RW formats, with 6 recording modes.
