Sprint Broadband

Sprint broadband is called FastConnect and uses DSL technology. The company has also wireless broadband options to choose from.

The speeds of the service are comparable to those offered by other DSL companies, such as SBC and Verizon.

As SBC has partnered with Yahoo! for add-on DSL services, also Sprint has partnered with EarthLink TotalAccess for additional Internet services.

If you choose to get them, the EarthLink services include:

  • Spyware Blocker
  • Parental Control
  • Virus Blocker
  • spamBlocker
  • Pop-Up Blocker
  • ScamBlocker
  • Easy Switch

Sprint Broadband - Wireless

Sprint also offers high speed internet connections wirelessly, using both cell phone and Wi-Fi technology.

Sprint PCS Wi-Fi access provides high-speed wireless coverage in an increasing number of Sprint-compatible public Wi-Fi ZONES nationwide and internationally.

The Wi-Fi service is a natural complement to the Sprint PCS Vision services offered through the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.

As for cell phone broadband technology (for PC cards also), Sprint uses technology called CDMA2000 1xRTT, which promises data transfer speeds of up to 144 kbps.

These data plans are available where Sprint has coverage for that technology.

Sprint is also planning and building the next generation of wireless data network, which uses an evolution of the 1xRTT technology, called EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized).

This technology promises average user speeds of 300-500 kbps and maximum rates of up to 2.4 Mbps for downloads.

This means that EV-DO will accelerate data speeds up to 10 times faster than on today’s network.

Expect to see the technology first available in select markets in the second half of 2004. Later, by 2005, the company expects to launch in the majority of top metropolitan markets in the United States.
