Retailers Cut CD Prices to Battle Online Downloading

If you live in Australia and buy your CDs from stores, you’re in for a treat. The major retailers are looking to make significant seasonal discounts to their retail CD prices to combat the popularity of online downloading and the arrival of iTunes in Australia.

One of the first steps in the combat is to slash prices of CDs, particularly those in new releases and top 40 titles categories.

These moves by Australia’s music retailers come very much in the anticipation of the official launch of Apple iTunes next Tuesday.

So far, the popularity of online music downloading has lead to a price increase of new chart CDs to as low as $22, while a year ago a top 40 album would sell for $30, according to information given by the Australian Retailers Association.
