Recordable DVD Players

Recordable DVD players offer the convenience of being able to record onto a DVD disc and having home theater quality DVD playback in one device.

As was the case in the early days of VCRs, there are more than one standard for DVD recording. The available standards are DVD-RAM, DVD-R/-RW, and DVD+R/+RW.

Of these, the DVD-RAM and DVD-R/-RW formats have been endorsed by DVD Forum, which is an industry group that supports the adoption of DVD technology. In opposition, DVD+RW Alliance has been formed to support the DVD+R/+RW standards adoption.

The standards war will continue into the next generation of DVD recorders with blue ray laser technology, as there are already at least two competing standards to choose a blue ray laser device from.

Available Types of Recordable DVD Players

There are many kinds of recordable DVD players out there. In addition to being able to record onto a DVD disc, some high-end recorders have a hard disk drive unit, which also can store programs.

Many use the hard drive unit for convenient short-term program storage, while the ones to keep are easily transferred to DVD discs.

Many of these features have been resembling the ones familiar from TiVO or ReplayTV devices, and in fact, some DVD manufacturers have been starting to add TiVo Basic service into their recorders.

In relation to basic players, recordable DVD players are still considerably expensive.

However, many are not happy having a VCR for program recording and DVD player for DVD playback, and many are planning to make the transfer to just one device.

This process will get speed as the prices of DVD recorders continue to fall. In fact, research company Strategy Analytics predicts that DVD recorder sales will surpass that of DVD players by year-end 2006.
