Progressive Scan DVD Recorders

Progressive scan DVD recorders create a picture signal with double the scan lines of traditional interlaced pictures in playback mode. The result is a higher picture resolution and a sharper image quality. However, you’ll need either a digital TV or HDTV to experience the progressive scan advantage.

With traditional interlaced scanning the picture is produced with combination of two fields to generate a picture of 525 scan lines (of which 480 are displayed).

With progressive scanning all the 525 lines (of which 480 are displayed) are scanned at the same time. This process is also marked as “480P” in some recorders.

Advantages of Progressive Scan DVD Recorders

With progressive scan, the entire image is completely scanned in 1/60th of a second, resulting in a smoother and sharper picture, with high resolution and no motion artifacts.

Most progressive scan recorders also incorporate a 3:2 pull-down feature, a pattern detection algorithm process that results in completely de-interlaced frames and no jaggedness along contours in the film.

The high-end progressive scan recorders use Faroudja deinterlacer for advanced progressive scanning results.
