Panasonic DMR HS2 Review

Here's a Panasonic DMR HS2 review of this DVD recorder that has been in stores since August 13, 2002. Includes pointers on value for money, best features, and where to look for competitive offers.

This Panasonic DVD recorder was one of the early models with a HDD unit, with capacity for 40GBs of programming.

The DMR HS2 functions very much like a TiVo like DVR. For example, you can watch a the beginning of a recording while the recorder is still recording the end.

Therefore, when comparing DVD recorders such as the DMR HS2, you should include DVR services, including ReplayTV and TiVo in your research.

Panasonic DMR HS2 Review - Features

For recording, the DMR HS2 HDD unit is good for storing up to 52 hours (in EP mode) programming.

In addition, the recorder can store up to 12 hours on a 9.4 GB double-sided DVD-RAM disc and six hours on a DVD-R (in EP mode).

As for playback features, the DMR HS2 has progressive-scan, and supports play back for DVDs, CDs, and JPEG-format files in discs.

Many use the HDD unit for temporary storage, and move the programs worth of long-term storage to the DVD-RAM or DVD-R discs.

Other features in the DMR HS2 include:

* Hybrid VBR (variable bit rate) technology that enables the long recording times on DVD-RAM discs* Time Slip feature support (Chasing Playback, Simultaneous Recording and Playback, Time Slip Roller and Button Control)* Memory card slot, compatible with Standard PC Card, SD Memory Card, CompactFlash Card, MultiMedia Card, Smart Media Card, and Memory Stick* Video inputs for 3 composite-video, 1 IEEE 1394 digital, and 1 RF

Panasonic DMR HS2 Review - Competition

The competition for the DMR HS2 include:

* Toshiba RS-TX20 (available in stores since September 22, 2004)* JVC DR-MS1S (available in stores since July 1, 2004)

Of these competitors, the Toshiba RS-RX20 has a 120GB HDD, a free basic TiVo service, and ColorStream Pro progressive-scan output.

The JVC DR-MS1S, meanwhile, is an all-in-one DVD recorder/VCR/HDD combo, with a sizeable 160GB HDD.
