Panasonic DMR E80H Review

Here's a Panasonic DMR E80H review of the recorder that has been available in stores since May 2, 2003. Includes a features comparison, analysis of the competition, and pointers on value for money.

It has been estimated that this year, about 50% of the new DVD recorders sold in the U.S. will have a HDD (hard drive) unit in them.

The DMR E80H is one option in the wide variety of recorders that are available for those considering a HDD DVD recorder.

The 80GB HDD unit is good for up to 104 hours of recording time (EP recording mode), plus up to 6 hours on a 4.7 GB DVD-RAM disc (again, in EP mode).

You'll also appreciate the DVD player features in the DMR E80H, as the recorder has progressive scan that improves picture quality, great to be used with HD-ready TV sets.

Panasonic DMR E80H Review - Features

The DMR E80H functions very much like a TiVo digital video recorder, boosted by the features in the DVD-RAM standard and the capabilities of the HDD unit.

Features include Time Slip, which allows you to watch the beginning of a program, while the recorder records the end.

Other viewing-pleasure enhancements include 3D noise reduction, block noise reduction, and mosquito noise reduction.

There is also connectivity for plugging your camcorder into the recorder and transferring home videos to the durable DVD format.

Other features include:

* Hybrid VBR (variable bit rate) technology (you can record up to 6 hours on a single-sided DVD-RAM disc with the hybrid VBR technology)* Playback support for DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, music CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs* One-touch recording* Reverse-frame step

Panasonic DMR E80H Review - Competition

The competitive offers with similar features include:

* Pioneer DVR-520H-S (available in stores since June 24, 2004)* Sony RDR-HX900 (available in stores since July 10, 2004)

The Pioneer DVD-520H-S has a similar 80GB hard drive, and also records to DVD-R & DVD-RW discs.

The Sony RDR-HX900, however, offers a bigger HDD unit, at 160 GB, which is good for up to 204 hours/8.5 days of programming.
