MP3 Ringtones
MP3 ringtones are the most advanced ringtones in the market today.
The first MP3 cell phones were introduced to the market by Samsung already back in 1999. The SCH M210, SPH-M2100, and SPH M2500 had MP3 players but the global marketshare for Samsung cell phones back then was so small that the models didn't get much publicity or support. Roll forward to today, and the situation has changed dramatically. Nearly all new cell phones support MP3 ringtones or competing standards, such as WAV, with comparable sound quality. This emergence of MP3 player / cell phone combination has also supported the development of hard drives for the mobile phone environment. Samsung has been the innovator also in that front, with the world's first cell phone (SPH-V5400) with a hard drive (with 1.5GB storage capacity). As the SPH-V5400 is able to store up to 350 MP3s recorded at 128 bits per second, it has the potential to substitute iPod-like devices, if there were also music-playing software on the phone.
