U.S. Census Bureau: Most Music Still Bought On CDs According to the U.S. Census Bureau, despite the popularity of online music downloads, most music is still bought on CDs.However, sales have dropped to 750 million CDs/year from 950 million in 2000.
The trend is likely to continue downwards, as online downloads are already a major source of entertainment and continue to rise in popularity, and MP3 players (especially Apple iPod) find their way into more homes. Some say it is about time that a better technology came along, as the first CD sales were made already way back in 1982. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the first CD disc cost the equivalent of about $1200 in today's money.
