Mobile Ringtone
Ever since the first mobile ringtone was downloaded back in 1997 to a Nokia cell phone, these “tunes on your phone” have become more and more popular. It makes sense to get a personal ringtone from the usability point – no more dorky fumbling “Is that me?”.
Of course, ringing tones are fun. Very few people can hold back a smile when someone’s cell phone starts to blast “YMCA” :-) Ringing tones are either monotonic, polyphonic, or MP3 type of soundbytes of your favorite songs. That’s why they are usually not free: the service providers should (not all do) pay royalty payments on all recognizable copyrighted pieces of music. The royalty payment per downloaded tune is usually about $0.10-$0.20, depending on the country. If you like mobile ringtone services, you should check two things. First, that your network provider (Verizon, Cingular etc.) supports tune downloads to their network. Secondly, that your cell phone is ringer download capable. What I can help you with is to provide reviews of the U.S. carriers cell phone services and links where you can check if your phone model is tones download capable.Recommended Cell Phone Plans to Get Your Favorite RingtonesIf you like ringers and would like to change them constantly according to your mood and tastes for a low price, my recommendation for a plan is to get a T-Mobile plan with an add-on t-zones service. The company offers a wide selection of tones for a fixed monthly price (under ten bucks), for which you can download to around 50 ringtones a month (or more), making the price per ringer tones ridiculously low (other carriers usually offer ringtones for $0.99 per tone). The downside is that T-Mobile services and the t-zone service add-on are not available everywhere, so you must check availability for your local area. You also need a specific t-zones capable handset with the plan.Mobile Ringtone Services by Cellular Phone CompanyVerizon Ringtone Service Verizon ringing tunes are available for select phones. The phones that are mobile ringtone capable are called “Get It Now Phones.” To see the Verizon ringer service in action, and the Get It Now phones and service prices, see verizonwireless.com. Cingular Mobile Ringtone Service Cingular tones are available for Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens and Sony Ericsson. There’s two ways to download the ringtones: On demand text message downloads and wireless Internet downloads. With on demand downloads, you send (from select phones) a SMS message to the service number, and Cingular will send the ringing tone to your phone. With wireless web service, you surf with your wireless web browser to the tunes' site and purchase the select mobile ringtone, which is then sent to your phone. Nextel Mobile Ringtone Service Nextel ringing tones are available only to a few select phones. According to the company, you can download additional tunes only to handsets i90 (software version R76.01.01 or higher), i95cl, i205 and i730. You can get additional ring tones in three ways. For one, you can purchase them directly from your phone. If you have an i205 or i730 model phone, select the 'Downloads' option from the phone’s main menu. If you have an i90 or i95cl model phone select 'Net' and then select either 'Downloads & Marketplace' or 'Downloads'. Browse the catalog and download a ring tone. This option requires you to have a Nextel Online data service. For the second option, you can purchase ringers from the web at www.nextel.com/downloads. Finally, you can visit your local Nextel store or authorized dealer and purchase a ring tone card. The card entitles you to download the ring tones listed on that card. ALLTEL Mobile Ringtone Service ALLTEL tunes service, under the Axcess service label, offers over 1,000 different ringer tones to choose from. The company has partnered with two other ringtone services, Modtones and Ringster. If your phone is capable of downloads for polyphonic ringing tones, Modtones offers a wide selection of those. If you’d like a great selection of the latest pop tunes as a ringing tune, Ringster service will provide those. The service is located at alltel.com. AT&T Mobile Ringtone Service AT&T ringer tones service has 100s of the latest songs as well as classics. You can either hand pick your favorite from their list of all ringer tunes, or you can SMS their specific SMS service number and they will send you either a list of the newest ringers or the current tunes top 10. AT&T has also partnered with the world’s leading mobile services company NTT DoCoMo of Japan. As a result of that partnership, U.S. AT&T now has a service called mMode. Sprint Mobile Ringtone Service Sprint ringers are available only to those that have a specific PCS Vision cell phone plan and a Vision capable handset. The brand new third generation service (to a very select few phones) from Sprint offers celebrity voices (such as Lil’ Mo and SK) as well as generic male (e.g. an army sergeant yelling “mail call!”) and female voices as ringing tunes. T-Mobile Mobile Ringtone Service T-Mobile ringer tones are available with an add-on package to the basic cell phone plan. The package is called “t-zones,” and you’ll also need a specific t-zones capable handset. Unlike the other carriers’ ringer services (possibly apart from AT&T’s mMode service), you’ll pay a monthly fixed fee to get ringers (and other entertainment content). The maximum amount of tunes you can download is about 50 per month for a modest monthly fixed price.
