Laptop Sales Still Strong
The new IDC report of computer sales in the first quarter of 2005 confirms that laptop sales are still strong globally. Much of the strong sales numbers for portable computers in the quarter came from strong sales in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) market, where sales grew 15% compared to the same period year earlier.
In the U.S., year-over-year overall PC sales increased just 6.5%. However, much of the growth even in the U.S. was driven by strong demand for laptop computers. As an example of the growing importance of notebook computers for the manufacturers, laptop computer sales for IBM, for example, accounted for 48% of IBM's computer sales.
