Laptop Backpacks

There are many reasons to use laptop backpacks. Many dislike laptop computer briefcases that distribute the weight of a laptop unevenly. And, if you have an 8-lbs. laptop, this can be a major issue.

Although laptops in general have become lighter, the ones offered for home use are still considerably heavy, with many weighting 6-lbs+.

Backpacks for laptops are not valid choices for most business people, as a backpack might ruin your first impression with a client (which is unforgivable).

For a more professional look, business people are better off with laptops in specifically designed briefcases. Furthermore, business people are likely to go for lighter laptop designs, say, at around 3 to 4-lbs, making it much easier to carry such a laptop.

Laptop Backpacks - Availability

Nowadays, there is a great variety of backpacks to choose from. The last time I bought a new backpack for a laptop, I found a whopping 82 different designs.

The most popular backpacks for laptops are made by Spire, Timberland, Eastpak, JanSport and Samsonite. Here’s my personal choice for a laptop backpack, the Samsonite Crosspack:

Backpacks offer a great relief in situations where you need to walk long distances with the laptop. From personal experience, a backpack comes even more handy when driving a bike.

Some Important Features in Laptop Backpacks

You have a variety of choices in terms of backpack materials and features.

You should probably get a backpack with separate pockets for the laptop, CD/DVD disks, cords and adapters, plus the cell phone/PDA.

When you have separate pockets (with zippers, to keep unwanted hands out), you can easily and quickly access the right laptop gear.

Laptop Backpacks - Materials

You should also give some thought to the backpack's materials. If you're going to use the backpack mostly outdoors, you should think about getting one with a PVC coating and water resistant external finishes.

Also, the shoulder straps should be fully padded to provide comfortable carrying. You should probably get fully padded back as well.

A backpack should carry at least a year’s warranty against manufacturer defects. The better laptop backpacks have a lifetime warranty.
