Holmes Air Purifier Filters

There are six main types of Holmes air purifier filters: 99.97% HEPA filters, 99% HEPA filters, carbon filters, electrostatic filters, washable foam filters, and ULPA filters.

Of these filters, the 99.97% HEPA filters are designed to to remove up to 99.97% of airborne pollutants, at 0.3 microns or larger, from the air that passes through the filter.

Meanwhile, 99% HEPA filters remove up to 99% of airborne particles, at 2 microns or larger.

Holmes carbon filters capture larger particles and help reduce unpleasant odors. According to Holmes, carbon absorbs odors generated by pets, mildew, cooking, construction materials and more.

Electrostatic Holmes filters filter the air using static electricity. They have a static-charge on the filter which causes airborne particles to attach to the filter.

For larger particles, there are washable foam filters and they can be easily cleaned.

Finally, an ULPA filter, also known as Ultra-HEPA filters, trap 99.999% of airborne particles, at 0.3 microns or larger.

Replacing Holmes Air Purifier Filters

There are some recommendations from the company as to how often to replace the filter in your Holmes air purifier.

For 99.97% HEPA filters, you should replace them every 12-18 months for best performance.

The 99% HEPA filters need replacement every 4-6 months and the carbon filters need to be replaced every 3-6 months, according to Holmes Group Inc., the manufacturer of Holmes air purifiers.

Fortunately, many of the Holmes models include a filter indicator light or digital display to indicate if filter replacement is needed.
