High Speed Internet Option High speed internet option choices include DSL, cable broadband, fiber optic broadband, and Satellite Broadband.
DSL DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology that uses telephone lines to provide fast internet access to homes and business throughout the country. Because the lines use telephone connections, most of the companies offering DSL are in fact the same companies that provide telephone services. Early on in the technology of broadband access in the U.S., cable providers had an edge on how fast the connections were over DSL. However, since then, at least internationally if not in all locations in the U.S., DSL has not only met all the benchmarks for cable, but exceeded them greatly. Cable Broadband Cable broadband uses the same cable lines that bring cable tv and other cable services to homes. Similarly to telecom companies that offer DSL, cable companies that offer broadband can also provide so called bundles, where you bundle tv and broadband services to the same bill. The idea is that the services purchases on a bundle are cheaper than what you'd pay for them separately. Cable broadband, similarly to DSL, has been upgrading the services to higher and higher speeds, but lately, internationally, the competition has been edging towards DSL services providing much greater speeds of internet access to cable. Satellite TV Satellite TV is one of the obvious choices for places within the U.S. where people cannot get DSL or cable. Because people are buying second homes, mobile homes, and holiday homes, a satellite connection is increasingly popular as a second connection to the home connection. Fiber Optic Broadband Fiber optic gets it's name from the material the lines use to provide some of the fastest broadband connection speeds available today. Most of the fiber optic lines also carry telephone services and are offered by telephone companies. However, as a new technology, these connections are available in limited locations only.
