The free MP3 real music ringtones online are typically downloaded to your desktop, then to your mobile with Bluetooth, cable, or infrared connection, for example.

MP3 tones are the latest hit among ringtones, as they sound as good as normal MP3s. The sound quality is usually somewhat limited by the cell phones capabilities, however.

The MP3 ringers go by many names, such as SuperTones, Real Tones, Audio Tones and so on. Sometimes the MP3 ringtones are confused with traditional polyphonic ringtones, which are of lesser quality (typically MIDI files), but one step better sounding than monotonic ringtones.

There are MP3 supported phones available from nearly all the major cell phone manufacturers, including Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, and Motorola.

The supported phones for advanced real music ringtones (not just MP3) include: Hitachi P300, Innostream INNO 89, Innostream INNO 90, Innostream INNO 99, LG 5350, LG VI-5225, MiTAC Mio 8390, Motorola A630, Motorola V180, Motorola V220, Motorola V300, Motorola V400, Motorola V500 / V505 / V525, Motorola V551 / V547 / V555, Motorola V600, Motorola V620, Nokia 3600, Nokia 3620, Nokia 3650, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6600, Nokia 7650, Nokia N-Gage, Samsung A500, Samsung A600, Samsung A620 (VGA 1000), Samsung A660 (VI660), Samsung A700, Samsung N400, Samsung P107, Samsung SGH-D100, Samsung SGH-P735 / SGH-P730, Samsung VM-A680, Sanyo 4900, Sanyo 5300, Sanyo 5500, Sanyo 8100, Sanyo PM-8200, Sanyo RL-4920, Sanyo RL-7300, Sanyo RL2500, Sanyo VM 4500, Sony Ericsson K500, Sony Ericsson T610, Sony Ericsson z1010, Sprint VI600 (Audiovox 8450).

If your phone does not support MP3, you may have to convert the MP3 files to the correct format (check your user manual). If your correct format is AMR or AWB, these files can be converted using the Nokia Multimedia Converter 2, which is available online for free.

If the format is WAV, you can convert with Advanced WMA Workshop converter.

For MMF format, there are free converter downloads available from Yamaha.

For many sites with free MP3 real music ringtones, you may have to first download the ringer to a desktop, then to your cell phone.

For Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones, this typically means using cables, infrared, or bluetooth, and phone manager software.

For most Motorolas, the options are either infrared or bluetooth with phone manager software.

Free MP3 Real Music Ringtones - Websites

For one type of website free ringer content, you can download tester ringers from almost all commercial ringtone sites.

These test ringers are an important part of the service, as they test the compatibility of the ringtone to the cell phone.

Also, there are sites that offer their database of these small snippets of music to be downloaded free of charge, and make money with advertisements or otherwise.

For example, mobileplayground.co.uk, has lots of freebies on their site.

Another great source for free MP3 ringers is the Walmart Music Store. The latest MP3 hits are available there in short, 30 second preview MP3 clips of the CD tracks, which is normally a great size for MP3 ringtones (don't go to the music downloads section, however).

To download the Walmart MP3 ringers to your desktop, use a right mouse click, "save as" combination.

Also, as there are resources for free MIDI ringers, such as 3Gupload.com (with over 30,000 content items for mobiles). Using converters, you can quickly have your favorite MIDI ringers as free MP3 real music ringtones.

Free MP3 Real Music Ringtones - Royalty Free

The free MP3 real music ringtones online are many times self-made, with a MP3 composer, then made available to the public.

As they're self-made, there is no need to pay royalty fees and the service providers can offer them free of charge at all times.

For other download services, which use MP3 ringtones from popular artists, the situation may change at any time, depending on whether these downloads are going to be associated as licences of the songs (and not direct sales), which would require paying royalty fees.

There may, of course, be costs associated for you when you download the tones, such as airtime fees, depending on the carrier.

As an example of free MP3 sites, there is gallery.mobile9.com. The site also has other free content for mobiles, including themes and wallpapers.

Free MP3 Real Music Ringtones - Composers

Similarly to royalty free downloads of other's music compositions, you can make MP3 ringtones yourself with a composer.

Because the standard is the widely supported MP3, you can compose these ringers with any online or desktop composer that allows saving the file in MP3 format.

One great piece of software for mixing your own MP3 hits is the Traktor DJ Studio 2.5.

For online composer sites, you can normally upload the finished MP3 file to a WAP site, and then download the MP3 ringer with your cell phone.

If you have a MIDI format composer, you can use a converter (like the Coding Workshop Ringtone Converter 5.1) to convert the MIDI file to MP3.

Free MP3 Real Music Ringtones - Making Your Own MP3 Clips

You can also make your own free MP3 real music ringtones from your favorite full length MP3 songs by using such tools as Audacity, Cool Edit Pro, Windows Sound Recorder, and a format converter.

You can use Audacity or other audio editors to copy the part of your favorite MP3 song you want as a ringtone.

If you save the file as WAV, you can further edit the ringtone clip with Windows Sound Recorder (typically by increasing the volume, say by 50%, depending, however, on the quality of the saved sound clip).

You also typically need to use the Noise Reduction level edit to make the ringtone sound better, before saving the file.
