Free Computer Games

Free computer games are offered under freeware, shareware (copyrighted software available for downloading on a free, limited trial basis), and demo categories. Demos are cut-down versions of full-fledged commercial games, and you can use them only to a certain extent.

Many of the offers for shareware or freeware originate from the same available sites.

Most of these sites describe whether the software is a shareware or a freeware. In addition, the instructions given in extracting the files usually define the type of software in question.

The glossary definition for shareware describes it as available for downloading on a free, limited trial basis.

If you decide to use the software, you're expected to register and pay a small fee. By registering and paying the fee, you become eligible for assistance and updates from the author.

On the other hand, the glossary definition for freeware describes it as a form of software distribution where the author retains copyright of the software, but makes the program available to others at no cost.

This software is often distributed on bulletin boards, or through user groups. The program may not be resold or distributed by others for profit.

Definition of demos describes them as animated presentations that describe or demonstrate program features.

Finding Free Computer Games

There are resources for all of the above sectors of sofware: freeware, shareware, and demos.

The most advanced of these free games are usually demos, as they are restricted demostration versions of games that have full force of commercial development behind them. In contrast, freewares and sharewares are usually done by one or a couple of developers.

The sites that distribute these categories include:

happypuppy.com

gamesdomain.com

gamespot.com

download.com.com

tucows.com
