EMS Cartoons

Enhanced Messaging Service cartoons, or EMS cartoons are based upon enhanced SMS technology, developed by L.M. Ericsson as a competitive answer to Nokia's Smart Messaging.

Although EMS has never been as popular as Smart Messaging, there are still some nice features in the EMS standard, of which cartoons are one.

Actually, Ericsson prefers to call these short animations, but the idea is still the same. You may also get cartoons as EMS picture messages, send one after another, based on a subscription service.

You may compose your own cartoon from the ready-made pictures or animations and send to friends that also have EMS phones. The animations are very limited in length, as they are based on SMS, and thus cannot carry much information in one message.

Something similar is also available to Nokia phones, as a company called Akumiitti developed a concept called Interactive Comics. These are basically cartoons, where you make decisions every few picture message/SMS message. The storyline develops depending on the choices you make, so it's interactive.

EMS Cartoons - Using Them

EMS pictures and animations are usually available from the same companies that also sell EMS ringtones to Motorola, Ericsson, and Siemens phones that support the standard.

You won't likely find "cartoon" categories, and thus you have to arrange the pictures and send them in order (if you find those kind of cartoon - like pictures) to your friends.

There used to be many German ringtone/picture message sites that sold EMS/Nokia cartoons by subscription a year, few years back, but I don't know any such company currently.
