DVD Player Manufacturers

Of the over 130 DVD player manufacturers and brands in existence, only a handful dominate the market in terms of market share. Most of the sold players are made by familiar electronics manufacturers, such as Pioneer, Sony, and Daewoo.

However, as the DVD player market has started to mature and as the prices of the techonology and manufacturing prices have come radically down (there is now a mass market), more and more small companies are starting to emerge.

Another trend among DVD manufacturers is the emergence of brand-based manufacturing, where trusted brands are licenced by electronics manufacturers and used to sell DVD players (and other tech stuff).

For example, if you love Disney products, you can now buy Disney DVD recorders (manufactured by Memorex), or if you trust Polaroid, you can now buy Polaroid DVD players (manufactured by Petters Group).

The DVD Player Market

The increased competition within DVD player field will ensure that new success stories similar to Apex (which grew mostly based on popularity of DVD players) will become more scarce.

However, new success stories and exciting new innovations are in store for the manufacturers with the next generation of DVD players and recorders. These DVD devices use blue ray laser (the old one is red), with greatly increased capacity and new features to enjoy.

The competition for next generation devices has already formed two camps, behind two different recording standards. Of the two camps, NEC's and Toshiba's format proposition has received official backing from the influential DVD Forum.
