DVD FVD HD Players

You may be familiar with the two best-known DVD HD player formats, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

There is another proposal for a DVD HD player standard, the FVD (Forward Versatile Disc), which comes from Taiwanese DVD manufacturers, originally announced a year ago.

Unlike HD DVD or Blu-Ray, FVD (Forward Versatile Disc) is based on the same red-laser technology that can be found in DVD and CD players today.

However, Forward Versatile Disc can store HD content with the help of MS Windows Media Video 9 codec, which allows 135 minutes of HD video on an FVD. In addition, FVD uses WMA for audio.

As FVD players use red-laser technology, the costs of manufacturing players are expected to be much less. In fact, the first FVD players, expected to be launched in Taiwan in May, are expected to retail for about TWD5500, which translates to less than $200.
