Dual DVD Recorders
Dual DVD recorders offer recording in both the DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW formats. Dual recorders are an everyday item for PC burners, and they’re becoming more common in standalone units as well.
The benefits of having both format recordings in one device are obvious. Because of the ongoing format war between DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW, buying a recorder with just one of these formats will keep you without compatibility with the other camp. There’s also a third format, DVD-RAM, but that is seen to have the least chance of ending up the dominant standard in recorders. However, DVD-RAM camp has many dual format DVD recorders with DVD-RAM and DVD-R capability. Because of the strength and loyal user base of both DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW camps, there are now more and more dual DVD recorders with both of these formats. Although this situation (having more than one dominant format) is unlikely to continue for a long period of time, these are ideal short term solutions. However, there is on downside to this wide compatibility: a higher price sticker for the DVD recorder. Dual DVD Recorders – Available Models Sony RDR-GX300 has a dual DVD format recording compatibility. Of these two formats, the DVD+R/+RW is claimed to have more backwards compatibility with existing DVD players than DVD-R/-RW. Sony has also RDR-HX900, a newer and more expensive dual format DVD recorder. The HX900 has a 160GB hard drive that enables you to store video before dubbing it to DVD. Other features include a built-in tuner with satellite/cable box control, Firewire and analog video inputs, and progressive scan playback. Similar dual support can be found from other manufacturers' models, including the popular LiteOn LVW-5005 DVD recorder. As for DVD-RAM format players, most of these have also DVD-R capability (and many have a hard drive disc, making these really useful and flexible machines). The Toshiba DVD recorders offer an exception, with at least several models offering multi format recording in DVD-RAM and DVD-R/-RW. Also, JVC has DRMV1S, which records DVDs in DVD-R/-RW and DVD-RAM formats, and also has a HiFi Stereo VCR unit for recording.
