Download Free MP3 Ringtones

You can download free MP3 ringtones from online resources either directly to your phone, or first to the desktop, then to your phone, via infrared, cables, or Bluetooth connection.

Most of the commercial sites either send the real music file over the air (via a MMS message, for example), or they make it available on a wireless web site, where you download it from.

Usually, you get the link via a SMS message.

For commercial sites, sending the MP3 tone messages has costs associated, so they can't offer them for free. They may (or should) also pay royalty fees to the artists whose sound bites are being sold as ringers.

Therefore, most of the free MP3 ring tone sites let you save the ringer file to the desktop, then download that ringer to your phone.

This way, you don't have to worry about the service provider being able to send the file to your carrier's network.

Transferring MP3 Files from Desktop to the Cell Phone

To get the MP3 ringtone file from your desktop to the phone, there are typically several methods available, depending on your phone.

For SonyEricsson cell phones, the methods include cables, infrared or Bluetooth connection, as well as phone manager software to send them to your phone.

If you have a Motorola cell phone, your methods to download the free MP3 ringing tones include using a Bluetooth connection, or infrared, and then managing the process with Mobile Phone manager application.

Nokia phones typically support downloads by using a cable, an infrared or Bluetooth connection, plus you need to use the PC Suite (which is a free download) to send them to your phone.

Websites to Download Free MP3 Ringtones From

The situation for MP3 ringtones is pretty much similar to the early days of monotonic ringtones, where there were many free ringtone providers, but very few were making due payments to the artists whose songs were being utilized in the business.

For MP3 ringtones, due to the widespread use of MP3 in music files, you can also find many MP3 ringtone providers.

One of the best such sites to download free MP3 ringtones, surprisingly, is not from a ringtone provider. Walmart, with its Music Store, has a wide variety of latest hits and older songs as preview MP3s of the CD tracks, conveniently in a 30 second song clip size (don't go to the music downloads section for the previews, however).

To download the Walmart MP3 ringtones to your desktop, use a right mouse click and "save as" combination.

Other websites, such as ToneThis.com, also offer low one-time fees, for which you get unlimited downloads (making the per-ringtone fees near zero).

Additional websites offering completely free MP3 ringing tones include:

mobileplayground.co.uk
gallery.mobile9.com

Finally, most commercial web sites (e.g.primetone.com) for MP3 ringers let you test your cell phone for compatibility with a free MP3 ringing tone.
