Broadband Definition

Broadband definition from FCC is data transmission speeds exceeding 200 kilobits per second (Kbps), or 200,000 bits per second, in at least one direction: downstream or upstream.

Defined in terms of service, broadband/high-speed Internet access allows access to the Internet and Internet-related services at significantly higher speeds than those available through “dial-up” Internet access services.

Broadband companies often define their broadband speeds in terms of how many times faster the high speed internet connection is in comparison to dial up internet.

Given that the official definition of broadband internet is more in terms of transmission speeds that type of service, there are different types of internet connections that qualify for the definition, including:

  • Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
  • Cable Modem
  • Fiber
  • Wireless
  • Satellite
  • Broadband over Powerline (BPL)

The broadband technology most choose will depend on a number of factors.

These include whether you are located in an urban or rural area, how broadband Internet access is packaged with other services and price and availability.
