For new laptops, perhaps the most obvious choice for purchasing the portable is Wal-Mart, the king in purchasing in bulk and driving down prices in industry after industry. Currently (April, 2008), their cheapest laptops are sold for under $400. That offer is for Everex laptop computer, which comes preinstalled with gOS and runs on 1.5GHz VIA C7-M processor, it lets you burn CDs, surf the Internet or watch the latest DVDs, with a bright widescreen display. gOS is short for Good OS, that is marketed as an alternative OS with Google Apps and other Web 2.0 apps for the modern user, and it runs on Linux instead of Microsoft OS. If you prefer Intel processors and MS Vista operating system, Walmart's cheapest such laptop computer currently is the Acer 15.4" Laptop PC w/ Intel Processor and Vista Home Edition, all for under $500. The other good way of getting a cheap laptop is to go the refurbished/overstocked route. These are typically laptops that have been returned to the store within the warranty period and have been reconditioned to be as good as new. Other reasons include just having their box opened or having a scratch or similar fault that makes them labeled as refurbished and sold with deep discounts. Also, overstocked items are items that have been overstocked and are sold with deep discounts, often through third parties, when new products replace them in their category.
