ATT Cell Phones
ATT cell phones (AT&T) are offered in six different categories of phone models:
* Free phones * Flip phones * International phones * mMode phones * Camera phones * Next generation phones These categories reflect the wide variety of phones available for both the TDMA and GSM network, which AT&T Wireless uses. In addition, the GSM network expansions the company has made have enabled GPRS connections. ATT Cell Phones – Free Phones The cornerstone of most cell phone companies marketing, offering free cell phones, is also a key strategy for AT&T Wireless. Because AT&T works with all the major manufacturers, they can offer a wide variety of phones, mainly from Nokia, Siemens, LG, NEC, Sony Ericsson, and Motorola. The last time I checked, they direct-sold 8 different handset models in this category. However, you may find additional free models from independent retailers that have their own rebates, increasing the number of free ATT cell phones available. ATT Cell Phones – Flip Phones Flip phones have become one of the latest crazes in mobile phones. The phenomenon is already years old in Japan, and is now catching on with the next generation phones that are available. Flip phones have several advantages against open interface models. For one, generally speaking, flip phones offer bigger screens, larger keyboards, and better protection from bumps and scratches to the screen. Also, most of these are advanced phones, offering features far beyond text messaging and voice. On the downside, flip ATT cell phones tend to be a bit on the expensive side. ATT Cell Phones – International Phones Having an international phone means you can use it overseas in most GSM markets. However, the North American GSM system operates on a unique frequency, which differs from most other countries with GSM service. Nokia has the economies of scale to produce entry-level international phones, which AT&T then offers to its customers. Other producers of international phones (offered through the company) include Panasonic, Sony Ericsson, and Siemens. ATT Cell Phones – mMode Phones mMode phones are phones that are capable of using the mMode service, which is all about increased productivity with your cell phone, and also about fun features, such as games. The mMode packages are offered as add-on service to the basic cell phone plans. Therefore, you might in fact get a mMode phone free with plan activation. All the major handset manufacturers that make phones with ringers and wireless capabilities have mMode capable phones. And because you need bandwidth and fast downloads to get the big packages of mMode content through, these ATT phones are all next generation handset models. ATT Cell Phones – Camera Phones AT&T has also been a fast mover in providing services for camera phone enthusiasts. The company offers a large selection of camera phones from the major manufacturers. However, keep in mind that there are several competing standards for sending and receiving pictures on a cell phone, so check which version your cell phone supports (this affects the ability to send pictures to friends, family etc. with camera phones). ATT Cell Phones – Next Generation Phones AT&T has selected GPRS as its next generation network of choice. Internationally, this network had a slow start due to people not upgrading to GPRS enabled phones quickly. But now, the GPRS network has become one of the most important features for cell phone users worldwide, enabling fast downloads of games, documents, ringers, presentations, you name it. All the major manufacturers make GPRS phones. Currently, the company direct sells over 20 different next generation handset models. The novelties among next generation cell phones are EDGE phones. These are meant to be used with AT&T EDGE network that allows data transfer speeds of up to 200 kbps. At least Nokia currently makes EDGE phones.
